The mirror of erised

In a scene from Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone, The Mirror of Erised is a mirror, which, according to Albus Dumbledore, shows the “deepest, most desperate desire of our hearts”. The happiest man on earth would be able to use the Mirror of Erised like a normal mirror, that is, he would look into it and see himself exactly as he is.

” The name “Erised” is “desire” spelled backwards, as if reflected in a mirror.The happiest person in the world would look in the mirror and see a reflection of them, exactly as they were.The writing engraved on the frame of the mirror says ‘Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi’, which if we look closely says “I show not your face, but your heart’s desire”.

I wonder at times what I would have seen in the mirror. Maybe driving a Lamborghini down The Tail Of Dragon, Tennessee, or smiling with some people whom past has taken away . But it does not do us well to dwell on dreams and forget to live, and even if what we see in the mirror was to come true, I’d still wish to see me. I’m not perfect yet, but I strive to be, to live the ideal life of no regrets. However, I do feel blessed enough, more than enough in fact, to proudly raise my hand when someone questions,” Are you happy?”.

Present is one of our most underestimated gifts. Often in life we are so busy lamenting the occurrences of past or fretting about the affairs of future we don’t realize what we’re letting slip by us.

As I once posted earlier, ‘we only know the value of a moment after it becomes a memory’. So I really think,  we need to stop for a minute, take a deep breath and contemplate, who we are, where we are and how blessed we are. Truly stating, if we start to thank Lord for every single good thing in life, it would take ages to list them all, however if we start to state the things we wished were there, then that infinity will be even bigger than the former.

Desires have no bounds, but neither does our happiness. A beggar can sleep peacefully inside his cold straw hut, and a king can be rendered sleepless by worries in his warm and cozy bed. Satisfaction and peace aren’t something we can attain by searching the material world. Kindle the joy of within, and with a merrier perspective, the world will come alive as a much better place!
